US President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran, adding that the Strait of Hormuz will be opened for all the ships. Tehran also stated that safe passage through the critical chokepoint will be possible if the US halts its strikes. The two-week window will be utilised by both parties to reach a larger agreement to establish peace in the region. The partial closure of Hormuz has led to a significant surge in the oil prices across the world, leading to a possible crisis.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, in his statement, said that the chokepoint will be opened for all the ships for the next two weeks. However, he also mentioned that safe passage will only be possible if the US halts its strikes. "If attacks against Iran are halted, our Powerful Armed Forces will cease their defensive operations," Araghchi said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
"For a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible via coordination with Iran's Armed Forces and with due consideration of technical limitations," the Iranian foreign minister added. However, as per Iran's semi-official Tasnim News Agency, both Iran and Oman are considering charging transit fees for the ships passing through the Hormuz during the ceasefire duration.
The transit fees are likely to be utilised by both the countries, especially Iran, for reconstruction, Tasnim reported. While Tehran claimed that the chokepoint was open for all the ships except the allies of the US, the reports suggested that it has been charging up to USD 2 million per vessel for passage through Hormuz.
The safe passage of the ships through the chokepoint is likely to provide a major relief to the energy sector across the world, especially in the Asian and European nations.
