Bangladesh interim government Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday said he would like to build strong ties with India and alleged some "fake news" are choking the way. Yunus, during a question-and-answer session at the Royal Institute of International Affairs in Chatham House, London on Wednesday, claimed Prime Minister Narendra Modi had brushed aside the question over Bangladesh's ousted PM Sheikh Hasina.
PM Modi did not respond positively: Yunus
Yunus claimed PM Modi did not respond "positively" when he asked to stop Hasina from making political statements from Indian soil. Notably, PM Modi had held a bilateral meeting on the margins of a BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok in April this year. Yunis claimed his Indian counterpart replied, "It is the social media, we cannot control it".

"When I had a chance to talk to Prime Minister Modi, I simply said you want to host her, I cannot force you to abandon that policy. But please help us in making sure she doesn’t speak to Bangladeshi people the way she is doing,” Hindustan Times quoted Yunus as saying while responding to a question from the audience. An Indian response to Yunus's claims is awaited.
The Bangladeshi leader claimed that his country got furious whenever Hasina addressed on social media platforms. "She announces on such and such day and at such and such hour she will speak, and the whole of Bangladesh gets very angry," said Yunus. "This is an explosive situation, you can’t just walk away by saying this is social media. This is what is still going on," added Yunus.

He said Bangladesh would continue to seek extradition of Hasina-- a topic which came up during PM Modi-Yunus bilateral meeting. However, people familiar with the matter had told news agency PTI that the Bangladeshi version of the meeting between Yunus and PM Modi was “mischievous and politically motivated”, especially the aspects relating to attacks on minorities and Dhaka’s request for extraditing Hasina. Ousted on August 5 last year after a massive student-led agitation, Hasina faces multiple cases in Bangladesh.
