Imran Khan Arrested: Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been sentenced to three years in prison in the Toshakhana case. The verdict was given by a district and sessions court in Pakistan. According to Geo News, the court has also imposed a fine of Rs 100,000 on the PTI chief. Soon after being convicted in the case, Imran Khan was arrested from his Zaman Park residence in Lahore. According to Dawn, the trial court presided over by Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Humayun Dilawar ruled that charges against the former prime minister in the case were proven.

"Imran Khan deliberately submitted fake details [of Toshakhana gifts] to the ECP and is found guilty of corrupt practices," he stated, sending the PTI chief to jail for three years under Section 174 of the Election Act.

What Is Toshakhana Case?

Toshakhana is a department that stores gifts and other expensive items received by public officials. According to the rules, it is mandatory for officials to report the gifts and other materials they receive to the Cabinet Division. The President and Prime Minister are exempt from this and can keep gifts that cost less than 30,000 Pakistani Rupees (PKR).

Imran Khan And Toshakhana Case | Timeline

The controversy took place when Imran Khan refused to disclose details of the gifts that he received during his tenure in office on demand from a journalist under Pakistan's Right To Information (RTI) law. The request was declined, citing concerns that it would severly impact relations with other countries. The journalist filed a complaint with the Federal Information Commission after the Cabinet Division refused to furnish information regarding the matter. The commission then instructed the Cabinet Division to furnish it according to the RTI law. But the Imran Khan government failed to follow the directive, leading to the party's demand to approach the high court to enforce the commission's decision.

Toshakhana Case: Allegations Against Ex-Pakistan PM

Imran Khan is accused of "deliberately hiding details about gifts" he kept from the Toshakhana. The gifts reportedly consist of seven watches, with six being Rolexes. According to Reuters, the most expensive among them was a "Master Graff limited edition", estimated at 85 million rupees ($300,000).

A complaint was filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) that claims Khan intentionally concealed information about the gifts he retained from the Toshakhana. It also disqualified Khan in 2022 for making false statements and incorrect declarations.
