India made consistent human development progress, moving to the 130th rank among 193 nations in the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)'s Human Development Report (HDR) 2025, published today. India's Human Development Index (HDI) value increased from 0.676 in 2022 to 0.685 in 2023 and continues to remain in the medium human development group, moving closer to the threshold for high human development.
The 2025 report, "A Matter of Choice: People and Possibilities in the Age of AI," highlights the transformative potential of artificial intelligence to mold human growth, particularly in fast-emerging economies such as India. The report underlines how strategic use of AI could help bridge development gaps and create new opportunities.
UNDP India Resident Representative Angela Lusigi praised India's progress, saying, "We congratulate India on its notable progress in the Human Development Index, rising from rank 133 in 2022 to 130 in 2023. This advancement reflects sustained improvements in key dimensions of human development, particularly in mean years of schooling and national income per capita. India's life expectancy reaching its highest level since the inception of the index is a testament to the country's robust recovery from the pandemic and its investments and commitment to long-term human well-being. With a renewed focus on women-led development, quality education and healthcare for all, India is well-positioned to achieve inclusive growth and continued progress on human development."
Development In Health And Education
India's life expectancy has improved to 72 years in 2023 from 58.6 years, its all-time high since the HDI was first recorded. This is due to continued public health programs like:

Schooling achievements have also increased, with children now expected to get 13 years of schooling, from 8.2 years. Initiatives such as the Right to Education Act, Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, and the National Education Policy 2020 have been responsible for this advancement.
