India on Wednesday delivered a sharp rebuke to Pakistan at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), highlighting what it called the hypocrisy of a country with a questionable human rights record attempting to lecture others. The criticism came during the 34th Meeting of the 60th Session of the UNHRC in Geneva, Switzerland.
Speaking at the session, Indian diplomat Mohammed Hussain said, “India finds it deeply ironic that a country like Pakistan seeks to lecture others on human rights. Instead of spreading propaganda, Pakistan should confront the persecution of minorities on its own soil.” His remarks highlighted India’s long-standing concerns over Pakistan’s treatment of vulnerable communities and its repeated failure to address internal human rights challenges.

Hussain’s statement was a direct response to Pakistan’s attempts to portray itself as a defender of human rights on the global stage, despite mounting evidence of systemic abuses within its borders.
Human Rights Violations
The session also saw international observers echo India’s concerns. Josh Bowes, an international geopolitical researcher, drew attention to alarming human rights violations in Pakistan, particularly in the restive province of Balochistan. Bowes cited the USCIRF Religious Freedom Report for 2025, noting that over 700 individuals were imprisoned on blasphemy charges, marking a 300 per cent increase from the previous year.
“These figures highlight a troubling pattern of suppression and persecution,” Bowes said, reinforcing India’s point that Pakistan continues to violate the rights of minorities and dissenters while projecting a moralistic stance internationally.
Growing Frustration And International Scrutiny
India’s intervention at the UNHRC reflects growing frustration with Pakistan’s attempts to gain credibility in international forums despite documented abuses at home. Diplomats and researchers emphasised that Pakistan’s domestic failings, ranging from persecution of minorities to suppression of free expression, undermine its claims of promoting human rights abroad.

Hussain’s remarks, supported by international experts, sent a clear message: countries that fail to address internal human rights issues cannot credibly lecture others. By highlighting Pakistan’s record, India aims to hold Islamabad accountable while calling for the protection of minorities and vulnerable communities within Pakistan.
