A wave of speculation and misinformation erupted online this week after several Pakistani social media accounts circulated a forged letter claiming that the Indian government had requested the transfer of former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan into its custody. The viral document, presented as a “top-secret” communication from India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), was quickly exposed as fake by India’s Press Information Bureau (PIB).
In a clear and firm response, PIB stated that the letter being circulated is completely fabricated and part of an ongoing disinformation campaign aimed at India.
“Several Pakistani propaganda accounts are circulating a letter on social media, claiming it to be a top-secret Ministry of External Affairs document that allegedly leaked online. The fabricated letter claims that the Indian Government has requested Pakistan to send Imran Khan to India as a political prisoner,” PIB wrote.

What The Fake Letter Claimed
The forged document, addressed to “His Excellency” in Islamabad, attempted to appear diplomatic and official. It claimed India was expressing concerns for Imran Khan’s “personal security and physical well-being” due to rising tensions in Pakistan’s detention facilities.
The letter referenced regional history, including a bizarre comparison to Bangladesh’s Sheikh Hasina, and proposed that Khan be “temporarily transferred” to Indian jurisdiction under a “mutually agreed protective framework.”
Why The Fake Letter Went Viral
The circulation of the forged document coincided with rising rumours about Imran Khan’s health and safety in prison. Khan has been jailed since August 2023 following convictions in multiple cases, including the Toshakhana case related to selling state gifts, a 10-year sentence for allegedly leaking a classified diplomatic cable, and a 14-year sentence in the Al-Qadir Trust graft case.
Khan and his party maintain that all charges are politically motivated and were brought after his ouster from power in 2022.
