What began as a routine late-night hospital drop turned into an unforgettable emergency for an Indian-origin cab driver in Canada, who safely transported not two, but three people to a hospital after a baby was born in the back seat of his taxi amid harsh winter conditions.
Urgent Call Turns Into Race Against Time
Hardeep Singh Toor, a Calgary-based taxi driver, received an urgent dispatch late last Saturday requesting a ride to a hospital. When he arrived at the pickup point, he realised the seriousness of the situation immediately. A visibly pregnant woman, assisted by her companion, was struggling to get into the cab and was clearly in labour.
Speaking to local media, Toor said the woman’s condition left little doubt that time was running out. He briefly considered calling an ambulance but decided to drive himself, citing severe weather and concerns about possible delays.
The journey unfolded during a stormy winter night, with temperatures hovering around minus 23 degrees Celsius. Snow-covered roads, poor visibility and slippery conditions made the drive extremely challenging. Despite the circumstances, Toor said his only focus was to reach the hospital as quickly and safely as possible. He later described the 30-minute drive as the longest of his life. The back seat was filled with cries of pain, movement and anxiety, while red traffic lights tested his nerves at every intersection.
Baby Born Just Blocks Away From Hospital
Just a few blocks from the Peter Lougheed Centre, Toor noticed a sudden silence from the back seat. The shouting and movement had stopped. Moments later, it became clear that the baby had been born inside the taxi, with the hospital building already in sight. “I did not stop,” Toor recalled. “I just wanted to get them to medical professionals as fast as possible.”
As soon as the cab reached the hospital entrance, medical staff rushed out to assist the mother and the newborn. Toor stepped aside, allowing doctors and nurses to take over immediately. He was later informed that both the mother and the baby were safe and doing well.
The incident drew attention on social media and local news outlets, highlighting the calm decision-making of the driver during an extraordinary situation.
Reflecting on the experience, Toor said it was the first time in his four-year career as a cab driver that he had witnessed a birth. “It’s my first experience getting two people in and three people out,” he said, calling it a proud and emotional moment.
The incident has been widely praised as an example of presence of mind and humanity, turning an ordinary taxi ride into a story of courage, compassion and new life born against the odds.
