A senior Indian-origin heart surgeon has been sentenced to six years in prison in the United Kingdom after being found guilty of sexually assaulting female staff members at a hospital where he worked.
Dr. Amal Krishna Bose, 55, formerly head of the cardiovascular surgery department at Blackpool Victoria Hospital in Lancashire, was convicted of 12 counts of sexual assault involving five women between 2017 and 2022. The court heard that Bose misused his position of power to harass junior staff, making it difficult for them to speak up against him.
During the trial, prosecutors detailed how Bose repeatedly touched female staff inappropriately, made lewd remarks, and created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation. He referred to female colleagues as “fresh meat” and described some as “shaggable” in WhatsApp groups, according to a BBC report.
Several victims shared harrowing accounts of their experiences. One nurse recalled how Bose groped her breast while she helped him prepare for surgery. Another said he touched her every time they met, leaving her so anxious that she altered her work shifts to avoid him. A third woman testified that he once groped her while pretending to take a pen from her pocket.
One victim, targeted for nearly three years, revealed she would call in sick just to avoid facing him. In her statement, she said Bose had “touched every intimate part of me” for his gratification, adding that the memory “still turns my stomach and makes me feel physically sick.”
Long-Lasting Trauma
The assaults left deep emotional scars. Some victims revealed they are still undergoing therapy for trauma and anxiety. One said she wakes up with night terrors, while another admitted feeling “isolated, vulnerable and deeply ashamed.”
Despite the serious allegations, when first questioned by Lancashire Police, Bose attempted to downplay his actions as “just flirting.”

Bose, once a highly respected surgeon, was suspended by the NHS trust following the complaints. The court was told he is now working as a parcel deliveryman after losing his prestigious medical career. Defending him, Tom Price KC said Bose had only fully realised the extent of the pain he caused when victims gave testimony in court.
Judge Philip Unsworth, while acknowledging Bose’s professional accomplishments, stressed that his skills and standing only made the case “all the more tragic.” “This was a gross breach of trust,” the judge said, handing down the six-year sentence.
