An 18-year-old Indian national studying at Northumbria University in the UK has been convicted of performing an indecent act in another student's room over the winter break. First-year civil engineering student Udkarsh Yadav pleaded guilty to the charge after DNA evidence confirmed his involvement.
The incident occurred in December 2024, when the female undergraduate had gone back home during the Christmas recess. Yadav accessed her room unlawfully using a gym access keycard, incorrectly programmed to open several rooms in the accommodation block. He masturbated and ejaculated on her bed cover and three soft toys, identified as Jellycat teddy bears. The crime was discovered when the victim returned early in January and observed a suspicious white crusted material on her toys and beddings. Forensic examination proved that the material was semen, whose DNA was traced back to Yadav.
Yadav Insisted That He Was "Overcome With Desire"
At first, Yadav had declined to speak when he was questioned by the police. But when faced with a DNA match, he confessed to the crime, claiming he was "overcome with desire". He was then indicted for committing an act of indecent exposure and damage to property. On June 20, the court sentenced Yadav to a 14-month prison term suspended for two years. He has also been directed to undergo 200 hours of unpaid community service and attend rehabilitation programmes. In addition, he has to pay 117 Euros as compensation for the damaged property.

After his conviction, Northumbria University confirmed that Yadav has been relocated to other accommodation. The university also confirmed that it is considering cancelling his student status, and he may be expelled. As a result of his conviction, Yadav's UK student visa is in danger of cancellation, which will result in his deportation to India.

A university official stated, “We were made aware of an administrative error resulting in unauthorised access to certain rooms within a partner-managed accommodation facility. Immediate corrective actions were taken, and more stringent access control measures are now in place.”
