Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, appearing on Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath’s popular podcast People by WTF, offered candid insights into America’s immigration challenges and the H-1B visa controversy. Speaking on the podcast, Musk defended high-skilled immigration and acknowledged India’s outsized contribution to America’s technological and scientific progress.

Musk praised Indian professionals, saying the US tech economy has flourished because of high-skilled Indian immigrants. He cited examples like Satya Nadella and Sundar Pichai, calling them proof of India’s extraordinary talent pool.

He noted that despite political debates, “there is always a scarcity of talented people,” adding, “We have a lot of difficulty finding enough talented people to get these difficult tasks done… more talented people would be good.”

Musk admitted that the H-1B programme, the primary gateway through which thousands of Indians enter the American workforce, has faced misuse by certain outsourcing companies. This, he said, triggered backlash and contributed to anti-immigration sentiment.

Critique Of US Border And Visa Policies

Musk rejected calls from conservative groups to abolish the H-1B programme, arguing that doing so would “actually be very bad.” Instead, he said, the goal should be to “stop the gaming of the system,” not shut it down.

He was critical of the immigration policies under the previous Biden administration, describing them as a “total free-for-all with no border controls.” Weak enforcement, he argued, had created large incentives for illegal immigration and resulted in what he called a “negative selection effect.”

“The left wants open borders, and the right thinks their jobs are being taken by outsiders,” Musk said, adding that such divisions make meaningful immigration reform difficult.
