A 44-year-old father of three died after collapsing in the emergency department of Grey Nuns Hospital in southeast Edmonton, raising questions from his family about the medical care he received despite repeatedly reporting severe chest pain.

Prashant Sreekumar suffered an apparent cardiac arrest on December 22 after waiting for hours in the hospital’s emergency room. He leaves behind his wife and three children aged three, 10 and 14. According to his father, Kumar Sreekumar, Prashant first experienced sudden chest pain while at work. He was taken to Grey Nuns Hospital, operated by the Covenant Health healthcare network, where he was triaged and asked to wait.

Kumar arrived shortly afterwards and said his son was in visible distress. “Papa, I cannot bear the pain,” Prashant told him, describing the pain as “15 out of 10.” Despite the repeated complaints, the family says Prashant was given only Tylenol and underwent an electrocardiogram (ECG), after which hospital staff said nothing significant was detected.

Blood Pressure Continued To Rise

While waiting, nurses periodically checked Prashant’s blood pressure, which Kumar said kept increasing. “It went up, up, and up. To me, it was through the roof,” he said. A video later shared on social media by Prashant’s wife claims his blood pressure reached 210 during the wait, yet no additional treatment was provided beyond pain relief medication.

Collapse Moments After Being Called In

After nearly eight hours in the waiting area, Prashant was finally called into the emergency room. His father said that within seconds of sitting down, Prashant stood up, clutched his chest and collapsed. “After sitting maybe 10 seconds, he looked at me, he got up and put his hand on his chest and just crashed,” Kumar recalled. 

Nurses immediately called for help and attempted to resuscitate Prashant, but it was too late. He was pronounced dead shortly afterwards, with the cause described as an apparent cardiac arrest.

In a statement to Global News, Grey Nuns Hospital expressed condolences to the family but declined to comment on the specifics of the patient’s care due to privacy concerns. “There is nothing more important than the safety and care of our patients and staff,” the hospital said.
