Dr Krishnamurthy Subramanian, India’s Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has been terminated from his position with immediate effect, as per a government notification issued on April 30. The abrupt dismissal comes before the end of his official three-year term, which was scheduled to end in November 2025. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), headed by the Prime Minister, approved the termination. Though no reason has been cited for the abrupt decision.

Who Is Dr Krishnamurthy?

Dr Krishnamurthy Subramanian, who took charge as Executive Director at the IMF in November 2022. Under this role, he represented India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan at the IMF. Before this, he worked as India's 17th Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) between 2018 and 2021 and was remembered for being the youngest individual to occupy the seat.

A graduate of IIT Kharagpur and IIM Calcutta, Dr Subramanian obtained his PhD in financial economics from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He has been a part of numerous expert committees and panels for the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). His research interests cut across important policy domains like banking regulation, corporate governance, bankruptcy law, and emerging markets. His papers have appeared in some of the leading journals such as The Review of Financial Studies and The Journal of Financial Economics.
