Amid uncertainty over second rounds of talks between Washington and Tehran, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is set to visit Pakistan, Oman, and Russia. He is likely to arrive in Islamabad on Friday for talks with Pakistani officials. The development came after recent phone calls between Araghchi and senior Pakistani leaders.

Iran FM Abbas Araghchi To Visit Pakistan

In a post on X, Araghchi confirmed his official tour to three countries, including Pakistan. He stated that the talks are bilateral in nature and would focus on regional developments. He wrote, “Embarking on timely tour of Islamabad, Muscat, and Moscow. Purpose of my visits is to closely coordinate with our partners on bilateral matters and consult on regional developments. Our neighbors are our priority.” However, several Pakistani media reports suggest that a US logistics and security team is already present in Islamabad ahead of the visit.

Are US-Iran Talks Moving Toward A Breakthrough?

Earlier in the day, in a phone call with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, Araghchi appreciated Islamabad’s “consistent and constructive facilitation role.” The development is significant as it is likely to lead to a second round of negotiations, aimed at ending the conflict in the Middle East. Al Jazeera reported, citing a Pakistani official, that there is a “high likelihood of a breakthrough” in efforts to restart US-Iran ceasefire talks amid rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Further discussion on the ceasefire, after the first round of talks had stalled after Tehran refused to join talks. A US delegation, reportedly led by Vice President JD Vance, also cancelled the visit to Islamabad thereafter.

Meanwhile, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has remarked that Iran still has a chance to make a “good and wise deal” and added that the US is not in a hurry, saying it has “all the time in the world.” He said, “Iran knows that they still have an open window to choose wisely at the negotiating table. All they have to do is abandon a nuclear weapon in meaningful and verifiable ways.”
