Racist attacks on Indians in Ireland: An Indian man has described a chilling case of racial harassment in Ireland, raising increasing fears about the security of the Indian community in the country. The 22-year-old alleged that a group of teenagers repeatedly hurled racist abuse at him while he was waiting at a bus stop, in what he described as a humiliating and isolating experience.
Indian Man Says He Was Harassed Three Times By Teenagers
In a detailed account shared on Reddit, the Indian man said that the group of teenagers passed him multiple times, taunting him and shouting racial slurs during their third drive-by. He said others waiting at the bus stop, including two Irish individuals and another person of South Asian origin, witnessed the episode but chose to remain silent. “There were two Irish people at the stop with me and another brown guy I don’t know, and nobody spoke up. We are on our own when push comes to shove. Stay strong, people,” the man wrote, expressing his disappointment at the lack of public intervention. The victim said that he did not choose to be born with brown skin and described the verbal abuse as both racist and demeaning. His account has triggered strong reactions online, with several commenters expressing solidarity and others calling out the indifference of bystanders.
Similar Racist Attacks Reported
The Reddit post comes on the heels of another such outrageous case in Dublin, where a 60-year-old Indian man was racially taunted and subjected to suggestive gestures by two young boys aged about seven or eight. The children, witnesses said, first asked for selfies with the old man but later began teasing him, trying to steal his wallet, and making lewd gestures. In another case earlier this week, a six-year-old Indian-origin girl was reportedly attacked by teenagers in Waterford. Her attackers spat on her, punched her, and pushed a bike into her private parts, all the while yelling racist abuse, including "Dirty Indian, go back to India."
Several Indians have been attacked in racially motivated attacks over the last few weeks:
• An Indian man was assaulted and half-stripped in Tallaght in a suspected racist attack.
• Indian-origin data scientist Dr Santosh Yadav was attacked by teenagers in Dublin.
• Taxi driver Lakhvir Singh was injured after being attacked by two men who pretended to be passengers.
• Indian hotel chef Laxman Das was robbed and attacked in Dublin by three suspects who ran off with his possessions.
Embassy Issues Advisory Amid Rising Attacks
The Indian Embassy in Ireland issued a safety advisory after multiple reports of racially motivated attacks on Indians. The advisory urged Indian citizens to remain cautious, avoid secluded areas late at night, and stay vigilant. "There has been an increase in the instances of physical attacks reported against Indian citizens in Ireland recently," the Embassy stated. The department is in contact with the relevant authorities in Ireland in this matter," the advisory added. The Embassy also condemned the attacks as "a blow to the ideals of equality and human dignity that Ireland holds dear."
Ireland's Garda National Diversity Unit has confirmed that investigations into the recent attacks are ongoing. The authorities have also been in contact with the Federation of Indian Communities of Ireland (FICI) to address security issues. Community leaders called on the Irish government to increase the security presence of law enforcement, launch campaigns for public awareness, and impose harsher sentences for racially motivated offenses.
With incidents of attacks varying from verbal harassment to physical assault, Indians in Ireland are more and more concerned about their safety. Although most Irish citizens on the internet have apologized and condemned the actions, the inactivity of onlookers in actual incidents has led to debate on social responsibility.
