In a controversial statement during a press briefing on Sunday, Pakistan’s military spokesperson, Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG-ISPR) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif, asserted that Islam is not just a personal belief held by soldiers but an essential part of the Pakistan Army’s formal training and operational philosophy.
Responding to a question about the religious undertones of recent military actions, Lt Gen Sharif emphasised the role of Islam in shaping the conduct and mission of the armed forces. “It is part of our faith. Iman (faith), Taqwa (piety), and Jihad fi Sabilillah (struggle in the path of God), that’s what drives us. That’s our motto,” he said.
He also stated that the leadership of the Pakistan Army, particularly the Army Chief, upholds these values, and it is their faith and commitment that “translates into such operations.”
"Jihad. That's what drives us. That's our motto."

Operation ‘Bunyanum Marsoos’ And Sunnah Timing
The DG-ISPR made these remarks when a journalist asked whether the name of Pakistan Army’s recent operation, ‘Bunyanum Marsoos’, and the timing of attacks during early morning hours, coinciding with Sunnah practices, were inspired by religious motivations.
Lt Gen Sharif replied, “The name of the operation tells you that those who fight in the path of Allah are like a wall of steel. We thank Allah and the people of Pakistan and its media.”
The term ‘Bunyanum Marsoos’ is derived from Islamic scripture and translates to “a compact and solid structure,” symbolising unity and strength in the name of Allah. The operation reportedly included pre-dawn attacks on Indian military and civilian targets, a time considered sacred in Islamic traditions and often associated with divine support in battles.
Adding to the controversy, a Pakistan Air Force officer present at the briefing claimed tactical brilliance in Pulwama, indicating an indirect admission of involvement in the 2019 Pulwama terror attack that killed 40 Indian CRPF personnel.
