Israel Built Secret Military Base In Iraq To Support Air Campaign Against Iran

US-Israel-Iran War: A local shepherd in Iraq observed something unusual: helicopters flying low and strange activity in a remote stretch of the western desert. It was later revealed that he had come across a secret base built by Israel. The facility was reportedly built to aid its military operations against Iran.

Israel Established Secret Military Base In Iraq

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, citing US officials, Israel established a secret military base in the Iraqi desert to support its air campaign against Iran. The base, set up just before the conflict began, was known to the United States but kept hidden from Iraq.

The base served as a critical logistical hub for the Israeli Air Force and housed special forces, including search-and-rescue teams positioned to respond immediately if any Israeli pilots were shot down over enemy territory.

While Iran is located approximately 1,000 miles from Israeli territory, this base significantly reduced the distance, allowing Tel Aviv to sustain long-term aerial operations with much greater efficiency.

Secret Operation Nearly Exposed After Shepherd Flags Unusual Activity

In early March, the operation came dangerously close to being exposed. According to Iraqi state media, a local shepherd flagged unusual military activity in the area, prompting the Iraqi military to dispatch troops to investigate.

To prevent them from reaching the site, Israel launched airstrikes that left one soldier dead and two injured. While the strikes were intended to protect the facility's secrecy, a subsequent search by two additional units uncovered physical evidence confirming that military forces had recently been present.

Following the confirmation of a secret Israeli base, a senior Iraqi military official, Lieutenant General Qais Al-Muhammadawi, Deputy Commander of the Joint Operations Command, said, "This reckless operation was carried out without coordination or approval. It appears there was a certain force on the ground before the strike, supported from the air, operating beyond the capabilities of our units."

Iran subsequently filed a complaint with the United Nations, attributing the strikes to the United States. The United States, however, denied involvement in that particular strike.

The western Iraqi desert, vast and almost non-populated, remains an ideal location for covert military activity. This same region was previously used by the US forces during strategic operations against Saddam Hussein in 1991 and 2003.
