Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on Wednesday a significant expansion of military operations in Gaza, marking a new phase in the ongoing conflict. The latest military action includes the seizure of large areas of land, which will be integrated into Israel’s “security zones.” Additionally, the Israeli government has ordered the mass evacuation of civilians from combat zones, though specifics on the plan remain unclear.
In a statement, Katz emphasised that the operation’s primary objective is to “crush and clear the area of terrorists and terror infrastructure.” He reiterated that the military would take control of strategic territories in Gaza as part of its broader security strategy. “Large areas will be incorporated into Israel’s security zone,” he stated.
Israel Proposes Hamas Disarmament Deal
Amid the military expansion, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that Hamas leaders will be allowed to leave the Gaza Strip if they agree to lay down their arms. This announcement came during a cabinet meeting, where he outlined Israel's broader strategy for Gaza’s future, emphasising the need for security and stability.
“We are willing to discuss the final phase. Hamas will lay down its weapons. Its leaders will be allowed to go out. We will ensure general security in the Gaza Strip and enable the implementation of the Trump plan, the voluntary immigration plan. This is the plan. We are not hiding it, we are ready to discuss it at any time,” Netanyahu stated.
The escalation follows months of intense fighting between Israeli forces and Hamas militants. Israel launched its military campaign in Gaza after Hamas-led gunmen carried out a deadly attack on southern Israeli communities on October 7, 2023. The assault resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages being taken into Gaza, according to Israeli reports. Since then, Israel has conducted extensive airstrikes and ground operations aimed at dismantling Hamas’s military capabilities.
