Middle East Conflict Updates: Amid the soaring Middle-East tensions, Israel again carried out intense airstrikes in southern Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah operatives in the second largest city, Tripoli, last night. Additionally, IDF struck terror operations in the capital Beirut, marking a continuation of its offensive against the Iran-backed Hezbollah group.
Two senior officials of Hamas, an ally of Hezbollah, were killed in Lebanon airstrikes, NYT reported, adding that the Israeli defence forces struck “weapons storage facilities, command centres and additional terrorist infrastructure” in and around Beirut.
Here Are the Latest Developments On the Middle East Conflict
1. The likely successor of former Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah remained out of contact since Israel's Friday night airstrikes targeting him and other senior ranking officials in the Dahiyeh area of Beirut. A senior Lebanese security source told Reuters that Hashem Safieddine remained out of contact since the airstrikes. Hezbollah has also made no comments so far on the fate of Safieddine.
2. Amid the Israeli attacks, Hezbollah fired over 90 rockets against the country, targeting northern Israel on Saturday night. The attacks, however, remained ineffective as most of the projectiles were intercepted by the Arrow and Iron Dome, Israeli officials said, adding that no injuries were reported in the attack.
3. Shifting back its attention to Gaza, Israeli warplanes struck a Hamas command centre housed in the Ibn Rushd school in the Deir al-Balah region of the central strip. Another strike targeted a second Hamas control centre in Deir al-Balah, located in the former site of the Shuhada al-Aqsa mosque, killing five and injuring 20, Hamas medical officials claimed as reported by the Times of Israel.
4. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released a video address to the nation, in which he reiterated his promise that Israel will defend itself against Iran. He further said that retaliating against Iran is an obligation that needs to be fulfilled.
5. Netanyahu also lambasted French President Immanuel Macron, who called on Western countries to impose a weapon embargo on Israel for its war in Gaza. "Will Iran impose an embargo on weapons to Hamas and Hezbollah," Netanyahu said, adding Israel will win the battle with or without him.
"I think the priority today is to get back to a political solution (and) that arms used to fight in Gaza are halted. France doesn't ship any," Macron had said.
