Japan Tsunami Alert: Japan on Thursday issued an advisory for a Tsunami of one metre for the islands off of Izu peninsula on the eastern coast of the country. The warning was issued following a 6.6 earthquake that struck the country in the morning near Torishima island, the Japan Meteorological Department (JMA) said. The epicentre of the earthquake was in the Pacific ocean about 550 kilometres south of Tokyo.

According Kyodo News Agency, tsunami waves as high as 30 cm hit the Hachijo Island at around 12:17 pm which is a part of the Izu island chain.

The weather department urged people to stay away from seashores until the advisory is lifted, adding that the region could be hit by further quakes as seismic activity has continued since earlier this week. The uninhabited island is located about 580 km South of Tokyo

However, the local police is yet to confirm any damage from the quake or tsunami so far.

JMA in its advisory urged the people in coastal areas and near river mouths to retreat to higher grounds. The meteorological department has also warned of potential aftershocks from the earthquake, stating that there is a possibility of an earthquake with a similar magnitude occurring.

It has also asked the people of Japan to stay alert. In 2006, a quake of similar magnitude was observed near Torishima island which caused a 16 cm tsunami at Miyaki-jima.

Japan is one of the most earthquake prone places on earth. A massive quake in 2011 caused a tsunami that destroyed huge swaths of northern Japan and caused a meltdown at the Fukushima nuclear plant.
