Khaleda Zia health: The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Tuesday thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his message expressing concern over the deteriorating health of former Bangladesh prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, calling it a “gesture of goodwill” at a time when the veteran leader continues to battle multiple complications.

In a post shared on X, the BNP said it “deeply appreciates this gesture of goodwill and the expression of readiness to extend support,” acknowledging PM Modi’s words wishing Khaleda Zia a speedy recovery. The party noted that the message from India carried significant diplomatic warmth, especially given the tense political climate in Dhaka.

PM Modi Offers Support, Says India Ready To Assist

Prime Minister Modi, in his post on Monday, said he was “deeply concerned” to hear about Khaleda Zia’s health, adding that she had made substantial contributions to Bangladesh’s public life over several decades. He extended “sincere prayers and best wishes for her speedy recovery,” and stressed that India stands prepared to extend “all possible support, in whatever way we can.”

The remark was widely shared by political leaders and observers, many viewing it as New Delhi’s attempt to signal humanitarian concern beyond political alignments.

Khaleda Zia’s Condition ‘Extremely Critical’

Khaleda Zia, a two-time prime minister and the first woman to hold the post in Bangladesh, remains one of the country’s most influential political figures despite her long-standing health battles. She has been undergoing treatment at Dhaka’s Evercare Hospital since November 23 after developing a severe chest infection that affected both her lungs and heart. According to doctors and BNP officials, her condition worsened sharply in the days following her admission. She was shifted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) after several complications escalated.

Party leaders confirmed she has been placed on ventilation, with a team of local and international specialists constantly monitoring her. BNP Vice-Chairman Ahmed Aazam Khan described her condition as “extremely grave,” adding, “There is nothing more to do except seek prayers from the whole nation.” Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir echoed the assessment, saying doctors are “trying their best,” but her condition remains unchanged.

The former prime minister has been suffering from a range of chronic ailments, including heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, kidney complications, liver cirrhosis and chronic eye issues. Her health has deteriorated significantly over the past few years, prompting repeated calls from BNP leaders to allow her to seek treatment abroad. Zia had returned to Bangladesh on May 6 after spending nearly four months in London for advanced medical treatment. She earlier underwent extensive care at the London Clinic under senior specialists.

Bangladesh’s interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus has also expressed concern regarding Zia’s condition. On Friday, he sent adviser Asif Nazrul to the hospital to inquire about her health, a gesture that signalled the seriousness with which the administration views the situation.
