Tragic accident in China has raised alarm about ultralight plane use with no regulation and social media-driven stunts. Tang Feiji, 55 years old and boasting almost 100,000 followers on Douyin, was killed on September 27 when he crashed his twin-rotor copter while going live with his fans.

State-controlled China News Service reported Feiji lost control of the helicopter in Jiange County, Sichuan Province. The chopper crashed to the ground and erupted into fire upon impact. Emergency responders reported he was declared dead at the scene. No damage to surrounding property occurred.

Video of the livestream, which went viral, initially displayed Feiji navigating the plane calmly. Then, the view shifted back to the ground as the aircraft crashed in flames. The surprise video has since triggered argument online regarding safety levels and the risks influencers expose themselves to in order to provide entertainment for their fans.

Dangerous Stunt And Inadequate Safety Equipment

Feiji, allegedly buying the twin-rotor plane for around USD 49,000 (350,000 yuan), said the aircraft could fly as high as 2,000 feet and as fast as 60 mph. In spite of the machine's strength, he admitted to only having six hours of experience before broadcasting flights on live stream. Feiji was not wearing a helmet or parachute when the plane crashed.

During a 2024 interview, Feiji admitted the plane had already experienced at least two instances of malfunction with the fuel gauge. In both cases, the plane descended around 30 feet before leveling out. Despite these warning signs, Feiji kept flying and streaming to his increasing fan base, frequently bragging about his abilities.
