Los Angeles riots: Protestors broke into stores in Los Angeles’s Jewelry District while police were busy dealing with anti-immigration protests across the city, multiple media reports say. Over the past few days, a gas station, an Apple store, Adidas, and T-Mobile shops were also robbed. Pictures show broken glass doors and boarded-up windows. The trouble started after US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids on Friday.

On Sunday evening, the Los Angeles Police Department reported looting on 6th Street and Broadway. Video footage showed masked people breaking into a sneaker store in the area. Police said most protesters were peaceful, but a California Highway Patrol officer told NewsNation that thieves were taking advantage of the police being focused on controlling the protests.

On Monday evening, police arrested several people for breaking into jewellery stores, but it’s unclear if they were protesters or just criminals taking advantage of the chaos.

On Tuesday morning, workers began cleaning up outside the Apple Tower Theatre on West 8th Street and Broadway after a break-in. Thieves stole iPhones, Apple Watches, and MacBooks, and spray-painted “No ICE” on the broken windows, referencing the Trump administration’s immigration actions. A few blocks away, police caught suspects after a Shoe Palace was robbed. A CVS pharmacy and a marijuana shop were also hit on Monday.

One store owner in the Jewelry District saw police arrest four people. Monty, who owns Bargain2Perfumes on West 7th Street, watched someone break into his shop. “I saw them break into my store,” he said. “They hit the Apple store and Adidas too. This isn’t about protesting.”

Another person told CBS News Los Angeles they saw thieves using saws and tools to break into stores, saying, “They came prepared.” On Saturday, before the looting started, the LAPD asked business owners to take pictures of any damage caused by thieves and send them to the police.
