Local firefighters said it was too early to determine what caused the explosion. Images circulating on social media and local news outlets showed the supermarket’s facade blackened with soot and shattered windows.
El Universal reported that the explosion occurred around 2 pm local time, prompting nearby businesses to shut their doors to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent structures. Fire crews battled the blaze for hours before bringing it under control.
The supermarket fire occurred during Mexico’s Day of the Dead celebrations, with emergency teams rushing victims to hospitals. Authorities said most fatalities were likely caused by inhalation of toxic gases. Early reports suggest the blaze may have started due to smoke from a malfunctioning transformer, though the exact cause remains under investigation. Officials clarified that the store, part of the Waldo’s chain, was not targeted in an attack. Firefighters are still determining whether an explosion actually occurred.
