Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday confirmed that Mohammad Sinwar, Hamas’s Gaza chief and one of Israel’s most wanted militants, had been eliminated. The announcement came during a session in the Knesset, where Netanyahu read a list of senior Hamas figures killed by Israeli forces. “We eliminated Mohammad Sinwar,” he stated, referring to the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, the architect of the October 7, 2024, attacks.

Reports emerged that Sinwar was likely killed in a targeted Israeli airstrike on May 13 in Khan Younis. The operation focused on a Hamas tunnel network. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz later confirmed that Sinwar’s body had been recovered from the site, increasing confidence in the success of the strike.

Taking Over Leadership After Yahya Sinwar’s Death

Mohammad Sinwar took command of Hamas’s Gaza operations after his brother Yahya was killed in an IDF operation in October 2024. As the new leader, Mohammad adopted heightened security measures to avoid assassination, often surrounding himself with hostages strategy dubbed the “hostage belt.”

According to Israel’s Channel 12, the decisive strike became possible only after Sinwar made the rare mistake of moving without his protective human shield. Israeli intelligence had tracked him for months but previously ruled out operations due to the presence of hostages. “No risks are taken if there’s even a one per cent chance that hostages are in the area,” a security source told the network.

Massive Blow To Hamas Leadership

The airstrike reportedly also eliminated several senior Hamas commanders. With both Sinwar brothers now dead, Hamas faces a significant leadership vacuum in Gaza. The loss of Mohammad Sinwar, the de facto commander after October 2024, is seen as one of the biggest setbacks for the group since the beginning of the war.

In his parliamentary address, Netanyahu also emphasised Israel’s coordination with the United States, particularly concerning Iran’s nuclear ambitions. “Any deal must prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons,” he said, referencing recent reports that Israel may be planning a preemptive strike on Iranian nuclear facilities.
