Nepal Gen Z Protest Live Updates: Nepal is witnessing one of its deadliest waves of civil unrest in recent years as protests over a government-imposed social media ban spiral into violent confrontations with security forces. What began as youth-led demonstrations against restrictions on platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and X has now transformed into a full-blown nationwide movement, marked by chants against corruption, fiery clashes, and a mounting death toll.
On Monday, thousands of Gen Z protesters flooded the streets of Kathmandu demanding that the government immediately lift the ban on social media, which has been in place since Friday after authorities blocked 26 “unregistered” sites. The ban, widely condemned as an attempt to stifle free expression and dissent, triggered confusion and anger among citizens, particularly young people who rely on these platforms for communication and activism.
The protests escalated in the capital’s New Baneshwor area after demonstrators jumped barricades, surrounded Parliament, and eventually set its main gate ablaze. Security forces responded with tear gas, water cannons, and, later, live ammunition to disperse the crowds. By late evening, at least 14 people were reported dead and dozens more injured, as reported by reuters
