Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif faced a wave of criticism online after a video surfaced showing him lavishly praising US President Donald Trump at a high-profile summit in Egypt. The incident occurred during the Sharm el-Sheikh summit, convened to celebrate the release of twenty Israeli hostages held in Gaza for two years under a ceasefire deal brokered by Trump.

During the summit, Trump paused his speech to invite Sharif, who was standing among other world leaders, to address the audience. Seizing the opportunity, Sharif lauded Trump as “a man of peace” and highlighted Pakistan’s nomination of the US President for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Sharif went further, calling Trump “a great president” and praising his “exemplary leadership”. He also credited Trump with achieving peace in Gaza, saving lives across the Middle East, and protecting millions in South Asia. “Today is one of the greatest days in contemporary history because peace has been achieved after untiring efforts led by Trump, who has relentlessly worked day in and day out to make this world a place of peace and prosperity,” Sharif said.

Before passing the microphone, Trump had praised Pakistan’s Asim Munir, calling him his “favourite field marshal”, who was absent at the summit. Trump then handed the stage to Sharif, jokingly referencing something the Pakistani leader had said previously.

Social Media Backlash

The video quickly went viral, sparking widespread criticism and mockery on platforms like Twitter and X. Many users accused Sharif of excessive flattery, framing it as a political move to gain favour with the US President.

One user commented, "Why are Pakistani politicians such Lucchas & Bootlickers? Shameless man Shehbaz Sharif is using the Palestinian struggle to score brownie points for his political career, trying to get close to Trump so he favours Pakistan over India."

Another user mocked the theatrics, saying, "Meloni is behaving like… 50 rupyekaat overacting ke," while a third added, "Seems like he forced him to say such nonsense."

Despite the backlash, supporters suggest Sharif was simply acknowledging Trump’s role in the Gaza ceasefire, emphasising diplomatic courtesy at a historic peace event. However, the optics of the moment have left many on social media questioning whether such praise crossed the line into excessive sycophancy.
