New York explosion: A powerful explosion rocked Manhattan’s Upper East Side on Friday morning, sending dense smoke billowing into the New York City skyline. The blast ignited a significant fire near East 95th Street and 2nd Avenue around 10 a.m., triggering a swift response from firefighters and police.

Three New York City firefighters sustained minor injuries on Friday while responding to a rooftop fire on a seven-story apartment building in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, The Independent reported.

The blaze, classified as a three-alarm fire, broke out around 10 a.m. at 305 East 95th Street, according to FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief James Canty, who spoke at a news conference.

Firefighters arrived within four minutes of the initial call and found heavy flames spreading across the roof, reaching three penthouse units and the ceiling area below. Roughly 40 fire units and 170 personnel, including EMS teams, were deployed to the scene, Canty said.

Fire under control

Crews were able to contain the fire to the building where it originated, preventing it from spreading to adjacent structures. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Earlier in the day, officials warned residents in the area to expect traffic disruptions and heavy smoke. People nearby were advised to keep windows closed and avoid exposure to the smoke.

Dramatic videos posted online showed thick black smoke billowing from the rooftop and filling nearby streets. Some clips also captured flames shooting from the top of the building.
