The incident took place as Netanyahu, who recently turned 77, visited the popular market with his wife, Sara, ahead of Israel’s October 27 election.

Glass Bottle Hurled At Netanyahu's Motorcade

The video circulating online shows a glass bottle being thrown towards Netanyahu’s motorcade as it passed through the crowded area. Security personnel can be seen jumping over barriers and moving into the crowd in search of the person who threw it. Despite the incident, the motorcade continued without major disruption. Netanyahu’s visit to Mahane Yehuda came shortly after his birthday.

Netanyahu and Sara were welcomed by crowds singing birthday songs and waving Likud party flags and Iranian Lion and Sun flags. Earlier on Thursday, Netanyahu had visited HaTikva Market in Tel Aviv, where a spectator challenged him over his government’s past handling of Hamas, asking, “Why did you send Hamas millions?” The visit also saw relatives of deceased hostages and families demanding accountability for the October 7 attack.

Why His Visit To Mahane Yehuda Matters?

Netanyahu's visit to Mahane Yehuda, popularly known as the Shuk matters as it has long been associated with working-class residents and support for right-wing parties, including Likud. It is one of Jerusalem’s best-known markets. It offers fresh produce, spices, bakeries and street food, while its restaurants, cafés and bars attract crowds at night.

The market is more than a shopping destination as it brings together people from different religious, cultural, and social backgrounds and reflects Jerusalem’s diverse identity. For Netanyahu, a visit to this popular Jerusalem location offers an opportunity to display public support ahead of the election. Israel is scheduled to hold parliamentary elections on October 27. Voters will elect members of the 120-seat Knesset.
