Peshawar School Rooof Collpase: At least 27 students and one teacher were killed on Thursday after the roof of a private school collapsed in the Dir Colony area of Peshawar in Pakistan. The tragic incident has also left more than 40 others injured and an emergency has been declared at the facility to treat them.

Authorities fear the death toll could rise, as rescue officials revealed that the roof of a higher floor collapsed onto the first floor, which then caved in on the students. According to Reuters, citing hospital spokesperson Mohammad Asim, most of the victims, the majority of whom were under the age of 13, were brought dead to the Lady Reading Hospital, where 20 other wounded individuals are also receiving treatment.

Several Fear Trapped, Video Captures Chaos At Site

Emergency rescue teams are currently working to clear the heavy debris as multiple children are still feared to be trapped underneath the rubble. Videos emerging online show scene of complete chaos at the site, with massive crowds of local residents and worried parents quickly gathering around the collapsed building.

The administration at Lady Reading Hospital (LRH) initially reported four fatalities but later confirmed that the death toll had risen as emergency teams pulled victims from the debris. The exact cause of the incident is yet not ascertained.

Past Roof Collapse Incident

Building collapses due to poor safety standards and the use of cheap, low-quality building materials are a frequent and tragic occurrence across Pakistan. Earlier in June this year, 14 Pakistani schoolchildren were killed and 20 others injured when the roof of a private tuition centre operating from an under-construction building collapsed in Lahore.

More than 30 children, aged between seven and 13 years, were attending classes at the academy, located in the densely populated Kahna Nau area, when the roof caved in, trapping them under the debris. Later, the Lahore Police in a statement said the house owner has also been taken into custody as part of the initial investigation.

According to a Geo News report, roof and building collapses are common across Pakistan, mainly because of poor safety standards and shoddy construction materials. Last year in July, 27 people were killed and 10 others injured when a five-storey building collapsed in the impoverished area of Karachi's Lyari.
