AI Impact On Jobs:  Every time an AI tool comes to market, a new wave of anxiety hits employees. From white-collar jobs to blue-collar jobs, every sector is taking a hit with the arrival of Artificial Intelligence. According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), approximately 92 million jobs will be affected globally by 2030. The recent layoffs across big giants, Amazon, Meta, Oracle, etc are prime examples of how AI is replacing humans.

So the question is which career will survive the storm of AI. The answer may be blurry for now, but if rightfully handled, AI can become the force for good and leave everyone with better opportunities.

What Founders Say About AI?

According to Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, “AI will either be the greatest equalizer ever invented, or the worst source of injustice.” He feels the challenges with the coming of AI are monumental. Concerned about losing their livelihoods, he said, “How will we protect the people who are most vulnerable to the harms caused by artificial intelligence, including those who lose their livelihoods and the sense that they are in control of their future?”

Former AI lead at Salesforce and Meta, Clara Shih, said that with AI evolving so rapidly, it is becoming difficult to predict which job roles will be worst affected. Talking to a CBS News journalist, she said that moving ahead there would be three types of jobs: employees who build AI, those who use AI, and those managed by AI. Among these, the third category already exists in the form of Uber drivers, delivery workers, support representatives, and sales development representatives.

How Is AI Impacting Workforce?

With the growing use of Artificial Intelligence in the workforce, administrative and clerical jobs are at high risk of displacement. As AI is becoming capable enough to handle basic coding, customer support, and other key roles, companies are finding it cost-effective to automate rather than employ people. This means that what previously required a team of employees to do a job now needs only one person equipped with AI tools. Processing hours in data processing, content drafting, and analysis have been significantly reduced because of AI.

“I am a software developer and am really scared of AI. I know it won't kill the software development, but it will definitely replace 90% of the software development jobs”, an employee shared his concern on social media.

Another said, “I don't think AI will replace people, it's just that business will need a lot less people and more people will then have to compete for fewer and fewer resources, and also more middle class workers competing for working class min wage jobs.”

Can Employees Survive AI?

Even though AI is displacing the workforce, employees can still survive it by mastering the generative and analytical skills relevant to the respective industry. Learn highly demanding soft skills such as complex strategic thinking, cross-functional leadership, and negotiation skills which AI is not still equipped to deal with. Rather than seeing it as job destruction, use it to upskill your productivity and personal value.
