Nobel Peace Prize 2025: The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday the winner of Nobel Peace Prize, a highly coveted but notoriously unpredictable award. This time, the award has been given to Maria Corina Machado for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.

No Nobel Peace Prize To Trump

Earlier, there has been persistent speculation ahead of the announcement about the possibility of the prize going to US President Donald Trump, fueled in part by the president himself, but longtime Nobel watchers say his chances remain remote despite notable foreign policy interventions for which he has taken personal credit.

Who is Maria Corina Machado?

Maria Corina Machado has led the struggle for democracy in the face of ever-expanding authoritarianism in Venezuela. In 1992 she established the Atenea Foundation, which works to benefit street children in Caracas.

Ten years later she was one of the founders of Súmate, which promotes free and fair elections and has conducted training and election monitoring. In 2010 she was elected to the National Assembly, winning a record number of votes. The regime expelled her from office in 2014. Machado leads the Vente Venezuela opposition party and in 2017 helped found the Soy Venezuela alliance, which unites pro-democracy forces in the country across political dividing lines.

In 2023 she announced her candidacy for president in the 2024 presidential election. When she was blocked from running, she supported the opposition’s alternative candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia. The opposition mobilised widely and collected systematic documentation that it was the true winner of the election. The regime declared victory and tightened its grip on power.

Why Maria Corina Machado gets Nobel Peace Prize, not Trump

On the other hand, Trump, who claimed to stop at least eight war, has been outspoken about his desire for a prize won by four of his predecessors - Barack Obama in 2009, Jimmy Carter in 2002, Woodrow Wilson in 1919 and Theodore Roosevelt in 1906.

Trump announced that a ceasefire and hostage deal had been secured between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas on Wednesday, under the first phase of his initiative to end the war in Gaza. But the committee last met on Monday - before the announcement of the deal. Even if its five members had known about it before making their choice for this year's award, it is unlikely they would have rushed into a decision they usually spend months debating.

Committee Secretary Kristian Berg Harpviken, who participates in all the deliberations of the five-strong panel but does not vote, said the award was not intended for last-minute achievements. "This is a prize primarily for work done in 2024 and prior years, it's not a prize for the work done in the most recent weeks or months," Harpviken told broadcaster NRK early on
Friday.
