Social media and researchers alike are revisiting the centuries-old prophecies of French astrologer Nostradamus. Born Michel de Nostredame in the 1500s, Nostradamus is widely known for his cryptic quatrains, compiled in Les Propheties, which have reportedly predicted major events including Adolf Hitler’s rise, the September 11 attacks, and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Perhaps the most chilling of the prophecies predicts a gigantic asteroid will either hit Earth or pass close. Last week, NASA announced that asteroid 2025 QV9, about the size of an airplane, flew safely by Earth at 1.25 million miles, with a speed of more than 10,000 mph. Although hundreds of near-Earth asteroids pass through our orbit annually, Nostradamus' forecast has fanned public interest in planetary defense.

Nostradamus' 2025 Predictions: Five Key Forecasts

• Earth-Asteroid Collision: Nostradamus is said to have foreseen a "fireball from the sky" arriving or hitting Earth. Though astronomers scan for possible threats, the prophecy has revived interest in whether or not an event with catastrophic impact might occur.
• Plague in England: The astrologer warned that England might be hit with an ancient plague, referred to as "worse than enemies." Experts point to the possibility of resurgences of diseases eradicated or emerging with highly contagious new diseases.
• End of Long-Running Wars: Nostradamus' work implies that current wars could cease in 2025 because of fatigue and neglect of resources. Most observers associate this with the Russia-Ukraine war, looking forward to possible peace due to economic and social strain.
• Economic Instability: There could be a worldwide financial downturn looming, based on readings of his quatrains. Forecasts involve the loss of jobs, bankruptcies, and increased social unrest in several countries.
• Medical Advancements: Nostradamus also predicted medical advancements, with some indications of treatments to alleviate the weight of chronic diseases, such as dementia. This follows as scientists continue to make advances in medicine and managing disease.

Nostradamus called Brazil the "Garden of the World" and foretold natural disasters in the form of floods and landslides as a result of climate change. He also foretold social uprisings and bloody clashes in England.

Though historians and scientists are still dubious of Nostradamus' prophecies, his works continue to fascinate the imagination of the general public. NASA and other space organizations emphasize that asteroid observation is ongoing and that Earth has never been better equipped to detect and respond to potential threats.
