National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Monday met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing, as part of steps by two countries to normalise bilateral relations. During the meeting, Doval stressed on the need to counter terrorism in all forms.

In a statement, NSA said, "NSA emphasised the need to counter terrorism in all its forms and manifestations to maintain overall peace and stability in the region." The remarks are also seen as an indirect message to China to put pressure on its all-weather ally Pakistan to take action against terror outfits operating from its soil.

NSA Doval is visiting China to attend the 20th Meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Security Council Secretaries. During the meeting, both sides reviewed recent developments in India-China bilateral relations and underscored the need to promote the overall development of the bilateral relations.

NSA noted that he looked forward to meeting with Wang Yi in India at a mutually convenient date for the 24th round of the Special Representative (SR) Talks. This is the first meeting between any two top leaders of the neighbouring countries after Operation Sindoor and subsequent escalation in tensions between India and Pakistan.

While China had urged restraint during the conflict, it had called Indian strikes on terror camps 'regrettable'. Essentially a Pakistani supporter, China had stated that it opposes all forms of terrorism, an apparent mention of the Pakistan-sponsored Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 civilians, including a Nepali citizen, and called for India's action.

According to Chinese envoy to India Xu Feihong, Wang noted that the bilateral relations have made some positive progress and it is essential that both sides further enhance communication, build mutual trust, and work toward resolving practical issues.
