Pakistan-Afghanistan Conflict: More than 400 people were killed after a Pakistani airstrike hit a drug treatment centre in Afghanistan's capital Kabul. The incident which took place on Monday late night has left 250 injured. Deputy Spokesperson for the Taliban government, Hamdullah Fitrat confirmed the death toll from the incident. He stated that large sections of the hospital were destroyed in the attack, and a further increase in the number of casualties is expected.  

Death toll Rises to 400, With 250 Injured

In a post on X, Fitrat stated that the attack at the Omid Addiction Treatment Hospital took place at 9 pm the previous night. The Taliban government blamed the Pakistani military regime for carrying out an airstrike. Fitrat wrote on X, "The Pakistani military regime carried out an airstrike at approximately 9:00 PM this evening on the Omid Addiction Treatment Hospital, a 2,000-bed facility dedicated to the treatment of drug addiction. As a result of the attack, large sections of the hospital have been destroyed, and there are serious concerns about a high number of casualties."  

He added, "Unfortunately, the death toll has so far reached 400, while around 250 others have been reported injured. Rescue teams are currently at the scene working to control the fire and recover the remaining bodies of the victims."

Video Emerges Online

Video of the incident has emerged online, with a clip showing firefighters struggling to control the blaze at the treatment centre in Kabul. The incident comes amid ongoing tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan, which had earlier seen escalation in February. Local TV stations also shared footage on X, showing emergency workers using flashlights to tend to casualties, while firefighters tried to extinguish flames amidst the building's ruins.   

According to Associated Press, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s spokesman, Mosharraf Zaidi, stated that the strikes “precisely targeted military installations and terrorist support infrastructure including technical equipment storage and ammunition storage of Afghan Taliban” and Afghanistan-based Pakistani militants in Kabul and Nangarhar.
