In what appears to be an anti-Semitic attack, miscreants threw petrol bombs at a synagogue in Berlin in the early hours of Wednesday. The attacks came in the wake of escalating tensions in the Middle East between Israel and Palestine.

The latest episode of anti-semitism in Germany prompted Chancellor Olaf Scholz to condemn the firebomb attack. He said, "We will never accept when attacks are carried out against Jewish institutions.”

Berlin Police launched an investigation into the attack with dozens of officers deployed in front of the synagogue in the city's Mitte neighbourhood. Nearby streets have been cordoned off for the investigation, said police.

Describing the ordeal, police said that two masked people approached the synagogue around 3:45 am (local time) and threw two Molotov cocktails, which blasted near the building on the sidewalk. Following this, the assistants took off from the scene.

Later, during the investigation, police thwarted another attempt at attack when a 30-year-old man approached the synagogue on a scooter and tried a force entry inside the premises. He raised 'anti-Israel' slogans when police detained him.

Local Jewish communities have expressed deep anguish over the incident. "We are all shocked by this terrorist attack,” Germany’s leading Jewish group, the Central Council of Jews said in a statement. “Above all, the families from the neighbourhood around the synagogue are shocked and unsettled. Words become deeds. Hamas’ ideology of extermination against everything Jewish is also having an effect in Germany.”

While in Egypt on Wednesday, Scholz, addressing reporters, stated that Germany would not tolerate violent and anti-Semitic demonstrations. Additionally, he emphasized the commitment to enhancing the protection of Jewish institutions.

"It outrages me personally what some of them are shouting and doing, and I am convinced that Germany’s citizens agree with me,” Scholz said.
