Ceasefire And Hostage Release Plans
The Gaza truce took effect just hours after Trump declared that Israel and Hamas agreed to the initial phase of his peace plan. Israel explained that the truce would officially take effect within 24 hours after its Cabinet approved the agreement through a vote. In the meantime, Israel's security cabinet had deliberations concerning the release plan of hostages. After the first 24 hours, a 72-hour timeline will start for the release of all hostages, an Israeli government spokesperson said.
The appeal came after PM Modi had spoken previously with President Trump, congratulating him on the historic peace move. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Trump also shared what was described as an “emotional and warm” phone call after the peace deal announcement. Netanyahu thanked Trump for his global leadership in facilitating the agreement.
Trump’s Peace Plan And First Phase Details
Trump described the development as a major milestone: “I am very proud to announce that Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan. All of the hostages…very soon will be released. Israel will withdraw their troops to an agreed-upon line as the first steps toward a Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace.”
Under the first phase of the plan, Hamas is set to release all 20 living Israeli hostages within the next few days, while the Israeli military will begin withdrawing from the majority of Gaza. The peace deal calls for an immediate ceasefire and transfer of power in Gaza to apolitical technocrats, supervised by an international body led by Trump and former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. Israel will also release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners, including about 250 serving life sentences for deadly attacks on Israelis.
Netanyahu described the agreement as “a diplomatic success” and “a national and moral victory for the State of Israel,” noting that all Israeli hostages would soon be returned home.
