Mark Carney: From Economist To Prime Minister
Mark Carney, a renowned economist and former governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, has now stepped into the political spotlight as Canada’s newest Prime Minister. Despite having no prior experience in elected office, Carney led the Liberal Party to a narrow victory in Monday’s general election, defeating the Conservatives who had been leading in the polls for months.
Carney’s campaign gained unexpected momentum in the final weeks, especially after US President Donald Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric about annexing Canada as the “51st state” triggered widespread backlash. Carney positioned himself as a defender of Canadian sovereignty, adopting a strong anti-Trump stance that resonated with undecided voters.

India-Canada Ties At Crossroads
Under Justin Trudeau's leadership, India-Canada relations hit historic lows, particularly after Trudeau alleged a possible involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar—a charge that India vehemently denied. The diplomatic fallout included tit-for-tat expulsions of diplomats and a freeze on bilateral trade talks.
With Carney taking the reins, hopes are high for a course correction. During the campaign, Carney promised to "rebuild" relations with India, emphasising the need for Canada to diversify its international partnerships in light of US trade volatility and security concerns.
