Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday held a bilateral meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. The two leaders, who had briefly interacted earlier this year at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, used the opportunity to review the progress of the India-Italy Strategic Partnership and discuss global issues of mutual concern.
PM Meloni began the meeting by expressing strong solidarity with India following the recent terror attack in Delhi. Condemning the incident unequivocally, she reiterated Italy’s commitment to supporting India in global efforts to combat terrorism. In this context, both leaders formally adopted the India-Italy Joint Initiative to Counter Financing of Terrorism.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the initiative will enhance coordination between the two countries across major international and multilateral platforms, including the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and the Global Counter Terrorism Forum (GCTF). New Delhi views this collaboration as a critical pillar in the effort to isolate and dismantle global terror infrastructure.

Deepening Strategic Partnership
The meeting also focused on reviewing the status of the India-Italy Strategic Partnership, which has seen considerable growth in recent years. Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the progress under the Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-29, which outlines cooperation across trade, investment, defence, security, technology, and cultural exchange.
PM Modi and PM Meloni discussed expanding collaboration in sectors such as artificial intelligence, space, research, innovation, clean energy, and advanced manufacturing. The two sides also emphasised the need to boost people-to-people ties, including education partnerships and mobility pathways for students and professionals.
