US President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that he had a “wonderful phone call” with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to wish him a happy birthday, praising Modi for doing a “tremendous job.” He also thanked Modi for supporting his efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
The exchange marked the first direct conversation between the two leaders since June 17. PM Modi’s remarks not only highlighted the personal rapport he shares with Trump but also emphasised India’s willingness to work closely with the US in shaping solutions to international challenges, including the ongoing Ukraine crisis.
Strengthening Global Partnership
India and the United States have consistently framed their bilateral relations as a “Comprehensive Global Partnership,” encompassing defense, technology, trade, and global security. Modi’s statement reaffirming his commitment to the relationship underscores India’s intent to continue building on past cooperation, even as both nations navigate shifting geopolitical landscapes.
Recent Trade Engagements
The timing of Modi’s exchange with Trump was significant. Hours before the leaders spoke, trade delegations from both countries concluded a round of discussions in New Delhi The US side was led by Brendan Lynch, Assistant US Trade Representative for South and Central Asia. Following the meeting, both governments described the talks as “positive,” signaling a renewed push toward resolving outstanding trade disputes.
Trump, who had previously imposed higher tariffs on Indian goods during his presidency, recently struck a conciliatory note, suggesting that trade negotiations with India remain on track. He also reiterated his intent to engage with his “good friend” Prime Minister Modi in the near future.
