Prince Harry reportedly faced a security scare when a woman described as a “stalker” was discovered hiding in the ladies’ restroom at The Royal Lancaster Hotel in West London, just 20 minutes before his arrival for the WellChild Awards on September 8, The Telegraph reported. Witnesses said the woman was mumbling “odd comments” about the Duke of Sussex. Security personnel quickly intervened, evicting her from the premises moments before Harry arrived.
She was later seen standing near his car. Police and sniffer dogs had already completed a security sweep prior to her discovery, highlighting the serious concern for the Prince’s safety.
'A Known Stalker'
The woman is believed to have mental health issues and has previously followed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. According to sources, she had come dangerously close to the Duke on two separate occasions during his visit to the UK. Two days after the hotel incident, Harry’s staff reportedly had to physically block her as he left Imperial College’s Centre for Blast Injury Studies in West London.
Athough security was provided for the WellChild Awards, Harry relied on his own staff for protection throughout the rest of his tour, leaving him feeling "abandoned" and painfully aware that his presence might jeopardise others.
Limited Security
It is known that the Metropolitan Police provided security for the day of the high-profile event, a decision made independently of the Royal Family or the Home Office. The step was said to have been taken considering the presence of children at the awards ceremony and the high profile nature of the event.
Harry, 41, who travelled from his home in Montecito, California, where he lives with wife Meghan and their children Archie, six, and Lilibet, four, reportedly felt a deep sense of responsibility and “enormous guilt” for the safety of those around him.
