Three Qatari diplomats were killed and two others injured in a car crash near Egypt’s Red Sea resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh on Sunday, Egyptian security officials told Reuters. The diplomats’ vehicle reportedly overturned on a sharp curve about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the city. They were traveling to Sharm El-Sheikh to attend preparations for a global peace summit focused on finalising a Gaza ceasefire agreement.
The accident occurred just one day before world leaders were set to gather in the resort city to solidify a deal aimed at ending the months-long Israel-Hamas war. The victims were part of Qatar’s protocol delegation assigned to assist their country’s representatives during the summit.
Qatar’s Role In Ceasefire Mediation
Qatar has been one of the most active mediators in the Gaza ceasefire negotiations, working in coordination with Egypt and the United States. The Gulf nation has played a critical role in bridging communication between Israel and Hamas, helping broker a truce that includes the release of Israeli hostages and hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

Earlier this month, talks in Sharm El-Sheikh, which included Turkish participation, had culminated in a preliminary ceasefire agreement. The upcoming summit was expected to finalise and implement that deal, marking a potential turning point in efforts to end the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
World Leaders To Attend 'Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit'
According to a statement from the Egyptian presidency, the “Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit” will be co-chaired by US President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Leaders from more than 20 countries, including French President Emmanuel Macron, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, are expected to attend.
The summit’s agenda will focus on solidifying the ceasefire framework, ensuring humanitarian access into Gaza, and outlining a roadmap for post-war reconstruction.
