Russia and Ukraine have agreed to avoid military strikes on vessels in the Black Sea, ensuring safe passage for commercial shipping, according to a statement from the White House. The agreement, reached separately in talks held in Saudi Arabia, aims to eliminate the use of force in maritime areas and prevent the exploitation of commercial vessels for military purposes.

The deal marks a significant step toward reducing tensions in the region, where previous hostilities have threatened global trade routes. Both nations, despite their ongoing conflict, recognise the importance of keeping commercial shipping routes open and secure.

Focus On Prisoner Exchange

In addition to maritime safety, the two countries remain committed to advancing humanitarian efforts. The agreement includes measures to facilitate the exchange of prisoners of war, the release of civilian detainees, and the return of Ukrainian children forcibly taken to Russia. The US has pledged to support efforts in implementing these commitments.

Kyiv and Washington have also agreed to work on banning strikes against energy facilities in both Russia and Ukraine. Attacks on critical energy infrastructure have previously escalated the conflict, causing widespread power shortages and humanitarian crises. By implementing this ban, both countries aim to stabilize civilian energy supplies and reduce the economic impact of the war.

The US and Ukraine have stated their intent to continue working toward a "durable and lasting peace" and have invited third-party nations to assist in implementing maritime and energy agreements. This move reflects a broader international effort to mediate the conflict and promote stability in the region.

As part of the agreement, the US will also help restore Russia's access to exporting agricultural and fertilizer products, ensuring global food security. This measure is expected to alleviate disruptions in global food markets caused by the war.

Ukraine's Warning On Russian Naval Movement

While the White House statement highlighted mutual commitments, the Ukrainian Defense Ministry issued a separate statement on X, clarifying its stance on Russian naval movements. Ukraine warned that if Russian warships move beyond the eastern part of the Black Sea, it will consider the action a violation of the agreement and a direct threat to national security.

"In this case, Ukraine will have the full right to exercise its right to self-defence," the ministry stated. Additionally, Ukrainian officials stressed the need for further "technical consultations" to ensure the effective implementation of the deal.
