Pakistan was shaken by a series of earthquakes on Sunday, the most powerful being magnitude 5.5 on the Richter Scale, official agencies reported. The latest earthquake, a magnitude 4.5 quake, occurred early Sunday morning, confirmed the National Center for Seismology (NCS). In a post on social media platform X, the NCS stated the quake happened at 08:02 AM IST, at a depth of 10 kilometres, which makes it more susceptible to aftershocks.  "EQ of M: 4.5, On: 29/06/2025 08:02:51 IST, Lat: 30.24 N, Long: 69.86 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Pakistan," the NCS wrote.

Seismologists caution that shallow earthquakes have the potential to produce more intense ground shaking since seismic waves travel a shorter distance to the surface. But no casualties or serious damage have been reported immediately so far.

Previous Quakes: Magnitude 5.2 and 4.4 Shocks Reported

A more powerful earthquake of magnitude 5.2 was reported earlier in the day at 03:54 AM IST, from the same area at a depth of 150 km. "EQ of M: 5.2, On: 29/06/2025 03:54:02 IST, Lat: 30.25 N, Long: 69.82 E, Depth: 150 Km, Location: Pakistan," the NCS tweeted. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) also registered a 5.5 magnitude earthquake on Sunday, and the epicentre was at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles).

Pakistan is one of the most seismically active nations in the world, positioned at the intersection of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. Areas like Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas are on the southern rim of the Eurasian plate. Sindh, Punjab, and Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir, on the other hand, are at the northwestern rim of the Indian plate. The ongoing collision between the plates renders the area vulnerable to regular and at times catastrophic earthquakes.

So far, there has been no official word of casualties or major structural damage caused by Sunday's quakes. Residents have been asked to remain vigilant and observe safety measures in the case of aftershocks.
