A Dhaka court has extended the remand for ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s advisor Salman F Rahman, former Law Minister Anisul Huq, and former military official Ziaul Ahsan by an additional 10 days each in separate murder cases.

According to a report from Daily Star, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jashim issued the orders in these cases. In addition to Salman F Rahman, Anisul Huq, and Ziaul Ahsan, former Chief Whip ASM Feroz and former army officer Major General Ziaul Ahsan were also placed on remand in connection with the murder cases.

The court granted a five-day remand to each of them for the killing of Khaled Saifullah, a student from Ideal College, during a student movement. They were then placed on another five-day remand each in the murder case of Sabuj Ali filed at the New Market police station.

Earlier, on August 13, Salman F Rahman and Anisul Haque were arrested by the Coast Guard while attempting to flee by boat. They were subsequently handed over to the police and later transferred to the custody of the Detective Branch.

Many members of the Awami League party, led by Sheikh Hasina, are currently in jail following the new interim government led by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus, which took charge on August 8 after the previous government’s fall.

Several cases have been filed against ousted Prime Minister Hasina, who resigned on August 5 and fled to India. Her party faced significant public backlash following unprecedented anti-government student-led protests.

The violence that erupted across Bangladesh after the Hasina government’s fall has resulted in over 230 deaths, raising the total death toll to more than 600 since the large-scale student protests against a controversial quota system in government jobs began in mid-July.
