Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla received an emotional welcome as he returned to Earth after an 18-day mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Heartwarming scenes marked the homecoming as his wife broke down in tears of relief and joy.

The family of India’s first astronaut to visit the ISS, particularly his mother Asha Shukla, was overwhelmed with relief and pride. “My son has safely returned, I thank God,” said Asha Shukla.. “I got emotional. After all, my son has returned after many days. I thank you all who have covered this event.” Her words reflected the immense pride and anxiety a mother bears when her child ventures far beyond Earth’s atmosphere.

Sister Shares Glimpse Of Life Aboard the ISS

While the nation watched in awe as the Axiom-4 capsule safely splashed down, the moment was especially emotional for Shukla’s sister, Suchi Shukla. Speaking to reporters earlier on Monday, she recalled, “We expected the splashdown on July 10, but it got delayed. Shubhanshu will now undergo a week-long quarantine before coming to India and finally home. We can’t wait to see him.”

Suchi also shared a touching memory from a recent video call with her brother during his time aboard the ISS. “He showed us the sunrise from his window,” she said. “It was mesmerising. We were awestruck. I wish we could’ve recorded it, but screen recording wasn’t allowed due to protocol. He showed us where he slept, ate, and worked. Watching him float around in zero gravity was incredible. He even showed us the Earth’s surface, mountains, and the moon. It will remain etched in our memories forever.”

Nation Celebrates A Proud Moment

The successful return of Shubhanshu Shukla and his crew has triggered celebrations not only in his hometown but across the nation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended his congratulations on the achievement.

“I join the nation in welcoming Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla as he returns to Earth from his historic mission to space,” the Prime Minister tweeted. “As India’s first astronaut to have visited the International Space Station, he has inspired a billion dreams through his dedication, courage, and pioneering spirit. It marks another milestone towards our own Human Space Flight Mission Gaganyaan.”
