At least 39 people died while over 70 others were injured after a high-speed train derailed and collided with another train in southern Spain on Sunday evening. The emergency responders are engaged in the rescue operation and pulling out those trapped inside. 

The tragic collision triggered panic among the passengers who used emergency hammers to break the windows and walk away. A video of the incident has gone viral on social media, showing injured passengers crawling out of the window.

The derailed train was travelling between Malaga and Madrid while the oncoming train was travelling from Madrid to Huelva, according to the Spanish rail agency ADIF.

Chief of Andalucia's regional government, Juanma Moreno said that 15 among the injured were in serious condition.

"The forcefulness of the accident has been very strong ... we will likely find (more) corpses," Moreno said, adding that heavy machinery would be used to remove the trains' wrecked metal pieces and to locate any new victims.

Where did this incident happen?

The incident occurred at 5:40 p.m. GMT (11:10 p.m. IST) near the Adamuez station in Cordoba, Spain. The Iryo 6189 Malaga-to-Madrid train derailed at Adamuez and jumped onto the adjacent track in the opposite direction, ADIF reported. The train on the adjacent track was a Madrid-to-Huelva train, which also derailed.

The Spanish Red Cross has set up a help centre near the crash site in Adamuz, offering assistance to emergency services and people seeking information.

Service is normal on these routes

High-speed rail services between Madrid and Andalusia have been disrupted following the incident. Meanwhile, commercial services between Madrid, Toledo, Ciudad Real, and Puertollano are operating normally.

Ireo is an Italian-run private rail operator. Andalusia Emergency Services said on social media that all rail traffic has been halted and emergency services are arriving at the scene.
