Six military personnel were killed when a Sri Lanka Air Force helicopter crashed into a reservoir in the north-central region of Maduru Oya on Friday. The helicopter was on its way to a demonstration event during a passing out parade of the Army's elite Special Forces brigade. The Ministry of Defence stated that the Bell 212 helicopter crashed while on its way to the intended destination, killing two Air Force crew and four soldiers of the Special Forces. The helicopter was part of a military exercise that was tied to the ceremonial occasion. The rescue teams rushed to the accident scene at Maduru Oya reservoir but reported all six crew members dead on arrival. Details of the identities of the deceased are yet to be made official.

Sri Lanka Air Force spokesman Group Captain Eranda Geeganage said. "The helicopter was assigned to conduct a grappling exercise at a passing-out parade. Four special forces personnel and two Air Force gunmen died of their injuries," Geeganage told Reuters. Airsports officials have confirmed that the helicopter was expected to be involved in an air display during the parade activities. The unexpected crash has left stringent questions about air safety measures under such high-pressure demonstrations. Sri Lanka Air Force said a nine-member panel has been appointed to probe the crash.
