Encrypted messaging app Telegram has responded to the arrest of its founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Pavel Durov, who was arrested in France over the weekend. The messaging platform said that it has nothing and “it is absurd to claim that a platform or its owner is responsible for abuse of that platform.”
In response to the arrest of Russian-born Pavel Durov at Le Bourget airport near Paris, where he landed via a private jet, Telegram has issued a statement emphasizing its commitment to adhering to European Union regulations. The company, facing scrutiny over allegations of failing to prevent criminal activities on its platform, reaffirmed its dedication to complying with EU laws, including the Digital Services Act.
“Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has nothing to hide and travels frequently in Europe. Almost a billion users globally use Telegram as a means of communication and as a source of vital information. We're awaiting a prompt resolution of this situation,” Telegram said in a statement.
“Telegram abides by EU laws, including the Digital Services Act — its moderation is within industry standards and constantly improving,” the company further added.
Why Was Pavel Durov Arrested?
Telegram CEO Pavel Durov was arrested at the Bourget airport outside Paris on the evening of August 24. He was placed in custody for offences related to the messaging app. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years of imprisonment. The app, which has nearly 800 million users, is widely famous in Russia as well as Ukraine.
Durov, a 39-year-old Russian-born billionaire and prominent tech entrepreneur, is facing serious allegations. French authorities, specifically the OFMIN (Office for the Protection of Minors), have issued an arrest warrant for Durov. The charges against him are severe, including accusations of organized crime, drug trafficking, fraud, cyberbullying, and promoting terrorism, news agency AFP reported citing a source.
