Former UK Prime Minster Tony Blair is in talks to lead the transitional authority in Gaza in a post-war scenario, a plan backed by the United States.

As per a report by the BBC, Blair would head the body supported by the United Nations and the Gulf countries. The body will eye to give control back to the Palestinian people eventually.

The development has been confirmed by the Blair office. The office said that he has been involved in the discussions, but clarified that he wouldn't back any proposal that talks of displacing Gazans.

According to the Israeli media reports, the proposed body could be called as the Gaza International Transitional Authority (GITA). The body would seek the UN mandate to serve as the supreme political and legal authority in Gaza for a five-year period.

As per the plans, GITA will initially operate out of Egypt and will enter Gaza after the conditions stabilise in the strip. To ensure security and governance in the strip, a multinational force would accompany the authority.

This comes after UK, France, Canada and Australia recognised the State of Palestine. Media reports suggest that the plan was proposed by US President Donald Trump during a closed-door meeting at the UNGA in New York this week.

The leaders from the Arab world and Islamic countries were present in the meeting when the plan was proposed, and it was welcomed by the UAE, Egypt, Qatar, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

The plan excludes Hamas from the governance structure, a stand that Israel has maintained since the October 7 massacre.

The government authority is crucial as Gaza remains in ruins with thousands dead and thousands others stand at the verge of poverty, malnutrition, etc.
