Top Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh has reportedly been killed in an attack in Iran’s capital Tehran on Wednesday. One of his bodyguards has also died.

The residence of the political bureau chief was targeted, Iran International English reported citing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of president-elect Masoud Pezeshkian.

"With condolences to the heroic nation of Palestine and the Islamic nation and the combatants of the Resistance Front and the noble nation of Iran, this morning [Wednesday] the residence of Mr. Dr. Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the political office of the Islamic Resistance of Hamas, was hit in Tehran, and following this incident, he and one of his bodyguards were martyred,” the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said in a statement.

No further detail on Haniyeh’s killing has been divulged in the statement.  

However, political analysts on Iranian state television have blamed Israel for this assassination. 

Notably, the Israeli Air Force claimed they killed three sons of Haniyeh in airstrikes in April this year. The deceased sons, confirmed by Israeli forces, were identified as Amir Haniyeh, a cell commander in the Hamas military wing, Mohammad and Hazem Haniyeh.

"IAF aircraft struck Amir Haniyeh, a cell commander in the Hamas military wing, and Mohammad and Hazem Haniyeh, both Hamas military operatives, in central Gaza today. The IDF confirms that the 3 operatives are the sons of Ismail Haniyeh, the chairman of Hamas' political bureau," IDF posted on X.
